Welcome

Welcome to We Are Folkestone – an initiative by the Turner Schools Trust to join together and celebrate Folkestone for the diverse town that it is. Our series of events in 2022 have been designed to help encourage all our pupils to feel proud of their town; to promote empathy and cultural awareness and to prepare them for a life in a modern world.

What is We Are Folkestone?

In 2022 with the support of Digital Kent, our sponsors, pupils and teachers in our 5 schools participated in many different events.

Folkestone Talks - Guests from all areas of the town were invited to speak to pupils at ‘speed networking’ style events. Audio and video recordings of these speakers have been made and can be seen here as part of the legacy of this project.

Roma International Day - On Thursday 31^st March we celebrated at the Folkestone Academy with talks given for the pupils to help understand the links our town has with the Roma Community. This was followed by a community celebration in the afternoon.

Pavement Pounders – a local community CIC – worked with us on a cross-generational project with older people in the community. Pupils from Turner Free School read and recorded specially created scripts from interviews the charity had made celebrating memories from World War 2.

Primary School Competitions - We also ran art and poetry competitions over our three primary schools. Some of the entries are exhibited here for you to see, and were also on show at our Summer Exhibition.

The We Are Folkestone project is part of the wider Turner Schools community engagement programme. As a Trust, our vision is to be at the heart of our community. Our children feel safe and happy at school, and to be able to meet so many new people who are vital members of Folkestone in a safe and secure environment is key to our pupils finding out about our town. Our pupils will grow up to become valuable members of our society by learning about the huge variety of work that goes on around us.
